A love story six centuries in the making: The history of Braxted Park Estate

History - 19.08.26

Long before the first bouquet was thrown across its lawns, Braxted Park Estate was already writing its own story. Ours is a history stretching back to 1342, when the land was recorded as a deer park belonging to the Countess of Pembroke. It’s a rather wonderful thought: that couples choosing Braxted Park Estate today are adding just the latest chapter to a tale nearly 700 years in the telling.

From deer park to family home

The Braxted Park Estate we know today began to take shape in 1680, when Thomas Darcy II left behind the old house near Braxted church and built Braxted Lodge on the very site where our house now stands. A cloth merchant named Peter Du Cane later made this his home, living here from 1751 until 1803, and it was under his watch that Sir Robert Taylor designed the mid-eighteenth-century red-brick house whose features still greet guests today. His son inherited the estate and set about extensive alterations to both house and grounds, shaping much of the grandeur you’ll find here now.

The estate then passed to a cousin, Charles Du Cane, in 1841. He cared for Braxted Park Estate until his death in 1889, after which, as so often happens when a guiding hand is lost, the estate drifted into gentle decline. William Boulton bought it from the Du Cane family in 1919, and it changed hands once more in 1947, when The Plessey Company acquired it under the direction of Sir Allen Clark.

A family home since 1946

This is where the story turns properly personal. Sir Allen Clark’s family moved into the house in 1946, and the Clarks have called Braxted Park Estate home ever since. His grandson, Duncan Clark, grew up here, spending his boyhood roaming the very grounds where so many couples now say “I do”. Duncan married Nicky in 1983, and together they raised five children who have since given them seven grandchildren, as well as two much-loved dogs.

It’s this enduring sense of family that gives Braxted Park Estate its warmth. Duncan and Nicky’s greatest joy remains gathering their loved ones together, whether for a picnic on the back lawn or a dinner around the table indoors.

Mystery in the grounds

No history of Braxted Park Estate would be complete without mention of the Hermitage, the enigmatic lakeside building once (inaccurately) known as the Ice House. Even architectural and garden historians can’t quite agree on what it was originally built for. The best guess is that it began life as a folly, likely commissioned by Peter Du Cane himself when he and Sir Robert Taylor were first shaping the estate in the late eighteenth century. Wandering past it today, along the boardwalk or beside the water, you’re walking through a mystery that’s outlasted centuries of speculation.

Your chapter begins here

Four and a half miles of brick wall enclose 500 acres of parkland, lakes, a parish church and, of course, that curious hermitage, and it’s all shaped by generations who poured their energy into this place. What strikes so many couples when they first visit is that Braxted Park Estate isn’t a backdrop frozen in time. It’s a living, breathing family home, still cared for by the people who love it, still growing, still welcoming.

Choosing to marry here means becoming part of something far bigger than a single day. Your celebration joins centuries of history, family and quiet devotion to this corner of Essex. Duncan and Nicky have created countless happy memories within these walls, and they hope, quite simply, that you’ll create just as many of your own.
